[one_half]René van der Duim (1953) studied Tourism in Breda and sociology in Tilburg. He completed his Ph.D. in 2005 and is now a professor of Tourism and Sustainable Development at Wageningen University. During the last fifteen years, René has primarily focused his research on the connections between tourism, nature conservation and development. In order to do this he has executed research and educational projects in Costa Rica, Nepal, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia and South Africa. During these research projects he collaborated with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). Through this René was able to conclude that – with proper management and inclusion of the local communities – tourism can substantially contribute to nature conservation.
